Winter Moth Caterpillars

After almost 12 years in New England the winter moth caterpillars have reached epidemic proportions. Introduced from northern Europe, the winter moth is a serious threat not only because there is not a natural predator to keep it in check but also they have a wide host range including oaks, maples, cherries, lindens, ash, apples and blueberries. If you noticed moths flying around your outdoor lights in late November and early December of 2010 then chances are you will have winter moth caterpillars defoliating your trees this spring. Early calls will ensure timely eradication of this harmful pest. The bio-agent known as conserve is the most widely accepted non-chemical spray. This bio-rational compound is safe for both the environment and the applicator and must be applied by a licensed professional.

Matt Foti Donates Maple Tree to the Battle Green in Lexington

It is not the best of times for street trees in Lexington, when only a single replacement tree can be planted for every three that are removed (I hope this scares you as much as it does me). It was most heartening, then, when Matt Foti, a well-known arborist in town, offered to provide and plant a tree on the Common. I took a look at the result today - a healthy, husky 30 sugar maple, already a worthy replacement for the venerable sugar maple that expired last year. On behalf of the Lexington Tree Committee I would like to thank Matt for his generosity and public spirit and commend his example to the town at large.
